Social Media 2013 In Review

It has been a big year for social media. We’re taking a look at the most influential milestones across the top platforms in 2013.

Twitter

  • 1.1 million tweets sent during January inauguration of President Obama (over 250,000 tweets per minute)
  • Twitter wins the Super Bowl – racking up 24 million tweets during the game (3x more than 2012) 
  • Oreo wins the blackout with real-response tweet
  • Inauguration of Pope Francis generates 132,000 tweets per minute in March
  • Twitter users assist police in hunting down perpetrators of Boston Marathon Bombings
  • In June, Justin Bieber becomes first person on the planet to reach 40 million followers
  • Twitter becomes fastest growing social network in the first half of the year; 21% of online population uses Twitter
  • Twitter reveals Twitter Cards
  • In July, platform totals 288 million active users
  • Glee star Lea Michele’s Twitter announcement of co-star Corey Monteith’s death is retweeted 408,000 times
  • In August, one single tweet adds $17 billion to Apple’s value
  • In September, Twitter goes public
  • Miley Cyrus’ MTV awards performance generates more than 300,000 tweets per minute
  • In October Twitter allows direct messages from all followers

 

Facebook

  •  In January, Facebook presents Graph Search
  • More than 600 million people use Facebook on a daily basis
  • Facebook rolls out Timeline redesign in March
  • In June, Facebook introduces hashtags
  • In July, Facebook introduces TV commercials and boasts 1.1 billion users
  • Revenue from mobile advertising up 8% and accounts for 31% of total turnover
  • Coca-cola named “Most Engaged” brand on Facebook in August
  • Facebook announces its 20% rule; no more than 20% of Facebook ad image can contain text
  • In November, Facebook tries to buy Snapchat for $3 billion; Snapchat declines
  • Facebook changes privacy settings, allowing teen profiles to be viewed publicly
  • Facebook names most talked about topics of 2013, list includes: Royal Baby, Harlem Shake, Pope Francis, Miley Cyrus and Nelson Mandela

 

Google Plus

  • Platform gets updated look and feel with entire redesign
  • Google+ lets brands determine subject of posts, add relevant hashtags and then rank relevant conversations across network
  • Releases new dashboard allowing page owners to manage presence in search, social, maps and Adwords all from one place
 

YouTube

  • Dove ‘real beauty sketches’ becomes most viewed campaign in history
  • In May, YouTube announces that 100 hours of video are uploaded every single minute
  • Most viral YouTube videos of 2013 include:
  1. Ylvis – “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” by tvnorge (292,237,164 views at time of posting)
  2. “Harlem Shake (original army edition)” by kennethaakonsen (96,721,508 views)
  3. “How Animals Eat Their Food” | MisterEpicMann by MisterEpicMann (90,897,768 views)
